Spatial Design for IKEA – AR Preview – Apple Vision Pro

This week, I want to share my second exploration of the IKEA x Apple Vision Pro project and discuss how spatial design can help solve user problems that are particularly relevant to me.

Also, I really wanted to include some edge cases in this exploration. In this specific animation, I’m showing how the interface communicates with the user, indicating that something is wrong with the object placement. The sensors then quickly detect the carpet and adjust the positioning of the table accordingly.

Is this bookshelf a good choice for my living room? I like this t-shirt, but will it look great on me? I don’t know. I literally have no idea until I try it. And well, it’s quite straightforward with digital design. It’s a matter of hours to create different design concepts for, let’s say, an app screen or a website section. But it’s quite different with physical objects. I can’t buy 10 different coffee tables and then decide which one is the best for my specific living room.

And this AR preview feature can solve this problem. I can preview as many tables (and not only tables but any furniture) as I want inside my living space to find the best fit for me. Will it look good with my sofa? And will it work well with my carpet? These questions won’t be a problem anymore.

If you want to play around with spatial design as well, I'd recommend starting with the visionOS documentation on Apple's developer website. Also, be sure to check out Apple's original visionOS design kit for Figma. It hadn't been released when I started working on this project, so you'll have a huge advantage.
